2023 was another successful year led by healthy surplus and premium growth of 6.2% and 10.6% respectively. The premium growth was largely focused in our most profitable areas including loss sensitive solutions, programs, surety, and manufacturing and should lead the way to a profitable 2024. Our line of business results were mixed with commercial auto underperforming plan, mostly offset by continued outperformance in Workers’ Compensation.
AM Best® once again affirmed our ‘A’ rating. Our strong balance sheet combined with our expertise in our target markets of construction, manufacturing and healthcare enable us to deliver on our commitment of providing industry leading service to our agency customers and policyholders.
Our digital transformation forges ahead with a core system upgrade and the implementation of a cloud-based policy and billing solution which follows a successful upgrade of our SureConnect® agency portal in 2023. These enhancements will streamline our processes and enable improvements to customer service through increased speed-to-market and easily accessible tools and data provided in real time.
We’ve also placed a significant emphasis on improving our commercial auto offering with a focus on helping our policyholders manage the safety of their drivers and fleets. By pioneering and leveraging new solutions and enhancing the availability of telematics and driver behavior-based insurance programs, we strive to improve our policyholders’ overall safety culture and bottom line.

Our Mission & Vision
Exceptional Service. Unmatched Partnerships.
Letter from Our President & CEO Greg Crabb
As we look forward to the year ahead, we remain committed to executing our Vision of being an industry leading specialist, transforming the insurance experience, one partnership at a time.
We continue to strive to further enhance the overall customer service experience, aiming to build upon our industry-leading Net Promoter Score. A recent example is how Amerisure claims professionals developed a comprehensive strategy to address the increasing challenges presented by legal system abuse and nuclear verdicts. Combining this strategy with our relentless focus on risk management to prevent losses allows our policyholders to better manage their insurance costs.
Our agency customers are central to our mission, and we know that together our powerful partnerships drive mutual success. Our many thought-provoking agency council sessions last year have been critical in identifying actionable steps to further enhance our relationships and deliver value to our policyholders. At the heart of why we win is the Amerisure team, and we were once again recognized as among the Best and Brightest Places to Work For® in the Nation, Best Places to Work in Insurance, and Computerworld’s Best Places to Work in IT.
Our commitment to our employees and our communities is highlighted by our Charitable Foundation which receives one percent of our net income each year and supports dozens of diverse charities and organizations. We are especially proud of funding a floor at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta where families can stay for free while their loved ones are receiving expert medical care after a traumatic injury. We also continue to value Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with a focus on ensuring an inclusive experience for all employees.

Amerisure is a leading provider of commercial property and casualty insurance solutions for U.S.-based construction, manufacturing and healthcare businesses. Licensed in all fifty states and available through an exclusive network of elite independent agents, the company upholds an “A” (Excellent) financial strength rating, industry-leading service scores, and multiple awards for innovation. Amerisure has been in business for more than 100 years and is consistently named among the best places to work in the industry and throughout the nation.
Amerisure’s balance sheet remains strong and conservative. The asset base of $3.3 billion includes a high quality and diversified investment portfolio of $2.8 billion. We maintain the strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalization as measured by AM Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR) scores at the 99.6% level. Our strong premium to surplus leverage ratio of 0.78 positions us well for future growth.
Balance Sheet Strength
As a mutual insurance organization, Amerisure is committed to long-term surplus growth for the benefit of our agency partners, policyholders, and employees. Investment market gains contributed to Amerisure’s healthy surplus growth of nearly $68 million in 2023. Surplus of nearly $1.2 billion ranks within the top 10% of the property & casualty insurance industry.
Surplus
Direct written premium grew by 10.6% to a company high of $966.7 million which was $ up $92.7 million over 2022. This includes a company high $146.5 million of new business. Core middle market wrote $107.8 million of new business and Amerisure Program business contributed an additional $15.1 million in new business. The launch of Amerisure Surety in 2022, added an additional $23.6 million, exceeding its plan by $5.1 million. Audit premium continued to be strong in 2023, adding $50.1 million with continued exposure growth.
The calendar year combined ratio of 107.6% is a deterioration over prior year, driven primarily by Commercial Auto results; however, excluding an asbestos reinsurance recoverable write off (0.7 point) and investment in core system technology (0.9 point), resulted in a normalized combined ratio of 106%. The calendar year results show adverse prior year reserve development of $5.5 million.
Calendar year combined ratio of 107.6% is a deterioration over prior year, driven by Commercial Auto underperformance as well a legacy write off and significant technology investment. Workers’ Compensation remained the largest line of business and produced favorable results partially offsetting the Commercial Auto underperformance.
Underwriting Results
Net investment income was $102 million outperforming prior year by $16.8 million. The strong investment income resulted in our investment ratio ending 1.6 points better than plan and producing an operating ratio of 95.6%. On a normalized basis the operating ratio would be 94%.
